Sandy Holdsworth opened his first premises in the 1920s, and by the 1930s the shop at 132 Lower Richmond Road had become a focal point for London's active cycling community. Holdsworth was not initially a manufacturer; like many cycle dealers of the period, the shop sold complete bicycles assembled from proprietary components and rebadged frames sourced from established framebuilders. The transition to in-house frame production occurred gradually, and by the post-war period Holdsworth was commissioning frames from a roster of London's finest independent builders, sold under the Holdsworth name and built to the shop's exacting specifications.

The shop's own racing team — the Holdsworth Professional squad, later sponsored by Campagnolo as Holdsworth-Campagnolo — provided both competitive credibility and a direct feedback loop: professional riders' requirements informed frame geometry and specification, and the frames that carried the team's orange-and-blue colours through the 1970s became the template for Holdsworth's top-tier production models.

The Framebuilders
